About

Vision begins in the present and is oriented toward the future. We are inspired by visionary art—art that deviates from the conventional in a self-willed, subversive, and instinctive manner, unconstrained by boundaries. By providing a platform for visionary art, we foster dialogue and broaden the understanding of art. At the heart of our work are the visionary artists themselves, whose positions are occasionally contextualized through engagement with more established artistic practices.

Our vision is one of balanced coexistence between lesser-known artists and already established creatives. In this way, we aim to make the art world more accessible and diverse. Future generations are thereby sensitized to respectful collaboration, both within the arts and in society at large. This objective is realized with great success through our unique educational and mediation concept.

The Musée Visionnaire was founded in 2013 by Susi Brunner and her husband Dr. Jörg Furrer as a private initiative under the status of a non-profit, tax-exempt association.

Note

We deliberately refrain from using the term Art Brut, coined by Jean Dubuffet. We recognize its historical significance and its role in bringing to visibility artistic practices that had long been overlooked. At the same time, we understand Art Brut as a concept closely tied to Dubuffet’s specific context and his curatorial and collecting practices. From our perspective, it therefore functions less as an open artistic paradigm and more as an art-historically situated category that no longer fully aligns with contemporary discourse.

Similarly, we do not employ the term Outsider Art, introduced by Roger Cardinal in 1972, as it tends—particularly from today’s vantage point—to produce positions that demarcate rather than connect.

With regard to self-willed and impulsive art, we use the term visionary art. By this, we mean art that deviates subversively and instinctively from the conventional, without boundaries. We do not intend to refer to surreal or psychedelic art.
